Chattanooga History Experience Opens Downtown
You’ve heard the stories of Chattanooga’s past, from the battles that shaped the city during the Civil War to the people who helped build its industrial legacy and the events that changed the course of its civil rights history. Now, there’s a place right in downtown Chattanooga bringing those stories to life.
The Chattanooga History Experience recently opened at 231 Broad Street, offering visitors an interactive look at approximately 12,000 years of Chattanooga and Hamilton County history, all within a 3,000-square-foot space. Designed to make local history accessible and engaging for all ages, the experience takes visitors from early human settlement in the region through the Chattanooga of today.
Visitors can move through immersive exhibits that explore the people, places and events that shaped the community. The experience touches on the Tennessee River and the region’s Indigenous history, the Civil War battles of Chickamauga, Chattanooga’s industrial development, the Civil Rights era, and the story of Ed Johnson, among many others.
A 40-foot timeline provides another way to see the scope of Chattanooga’s history, with each 12-inch mark representing 300 years. Visitors can also explore interactive elements throughout the experience, including a recreated cave that highlights the region’s unique geology.
Beyond giving visitors a new way to experience Chattanooga’s history, the project also gave local high school and college students the opportunity to help bring that history to life. Students gained hands-on experience contributing to the attraction’s storytelling, design and filmmaking, including an original student-led short film about Ed Johnson.
Located on Broad Street, this new experience gives residents and visitors another way to explore downtown while learning more about the city they know. With so many stories woven into Chattanooga’s history, this new experience offers a place to bring some of those stories together and see the city from a different perspective.
The Chattanooga History Experience is currently open on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Visit the experience at 231 Broad Street. This installation is expected to remain open until the summer of 2027. Go check it out!
